GORDON WILSON'S LINGUISTIC ATLAS

Kentucky Oral History Commission, Preservation + Digitization Grant

In addition to being a celebrated ornithologist, newspaper columnist, and English professor, Gordon Wilson made a lasting impression in the field of folklore with the creation of his regional linguistic atlas. Beginning in the late 1950s, Gordon began interviewing residents of the Mammoth Cave region about their patterns of folk speech, including pronunciation, grammar, and vocabulary. His efforts led to the collection of more than 18,500 index cards amassed from 240 participants. In 1963 Wilson incorporated the use of magnetic reel-to-reel audiotape in his fieldwork recordings.

Due to their cultural significance, as well as their relatively short shelf-life, the recordings are prime candidates for careful digitization and preservation efforts. The following is a mock grant completed as a project for a Public Folklore course and can be viewed by clicking here

GIMMICKS, GOLD, and GUSHERS

American Folklife Center, Archie Green Fellowship

In May of 2019, I received an Archie Green Fellowship from the American Folklife Center at the Library of Congress. The fellowship, which stresses the importance of occupational folklore, allows for researchers to conduct extensive fieldwork in an area of their choosing. The following is the submitted proposal for "Gimmicks, Gold, and Gushers," a project that focuses on independent professional wrestlers throughout the Central Appalachian region.
