ADDISON ROGERS
Folklore Fieldwork
As one-half of the Bloomington, Indiana indie-pop band Busman's Holiday, Addison Rogers has a lot on his plate. Musician, television station manager, and improv performer rolled into one, Rogers is no stranger to the public spotlight. The following is a collection of materials—style sheets, transcriptions, and indexes—gathered together from an interview with Rogers for an Introduction to Fieldwork course. The assignment in its entirety can be viewed by clicking here.
CONTEMPORARY FOLKLORE SCHOLARSHIP
Folklore Theory
Rigorous in its discussion of key figures, methodological approaches, and historical movements throughout the span of its existence, the Folklore Theory course provided an in-depth overview of the theoretical underpinnings of the field of folklore as a whole. For our final research paper, students were asked to examine multiple dissertations+theses, special journal issues, and contemporary publications to pinpoint and analyze current trends within the discipline. The finished paper can be viewed by clicking here.
OF MOUNTS AND MOLDS
Folk Art and Technology
Whether creating mounts as a hobby or building environmental exhibits for high-paying clients, taxidermists are charged with the seemingly impossible task of reconstructing the bodies of animals both wild and domestic. By tying together elements of woodworking, painting, sculpting, resin-casting, and leather tanning, taxidermists display a level of artistic ability that reaffirms their rightful place within the field of folk art.
Based on fieldwork and interviews conducted for a Folk Art and Technology course, the following research paper makes the claim that taxidermists adhere to a set of accepted aesthetic values and play an integral, artistic role within their own communities. The final paper can be viewed by clicking here.
